AUBURN
With her debut single “Up In My Ear (La La La),” 21-year-old newcomer Auburn Williams establishes herself as an exciting new talent on the pop music scene. The song is an irresistible slice of urban-pop ear candy that doubles as a sassy empowerment anthem as it dismisses an in-your-face suitor with its irresistible “la la la” refrain.

“It’s about how you’re trying to have a good time and someone gets in your face and starts complaining,” Auburn says. “You have to put your fingers in your ears and say, ‘la la la, I can’t hear you!’ The song has a lot of my personality in it. When I sang it, I felt the irritation. I was really saying ‘Get out of my ear please!’”

The track’s playful vibe is just a taste of what this appealing young singer, songwriter, and rapper has in store for the debut album she’s currently creating in the studio with J.R. Rotem, who has produced multi-platinum hits for Rihanna, Sean Kingston, Jason Derulo, Iyaz, Leona Lewis, Britney Spears, Rick Ross, and others.

“I think there needs to be meaning behind a song,” Auburn says. “Sure there are times when you need to dance and have fun, but, to me, the best songs are those that have a message. If someone’s going through something, whether it’s a situation with a family member, or not having any money, or dealing with a break-up, an inspirational song can help them get through it.”

Auburn was born in Minneapolis to a single mother who raised her and her two older siblings in a no-nonsense household. A straight-A student who graduated from high school a year early, Auburn was a tomboy and self-described “nerd” who remembers being painfully shy as a kid. “My uncle nicknamed me ‘Wednesday,’ after the daughter in The Addams Family, because I was so quiet,” she says with a laugh. Auburn began singing in church and listened to nothing but gospel music as a kid. “BeBe and CeCe Winans, Fred Hammond, and a bit of Whitney Houston, that was about it,” she says. She got behind the mic for the first time at age nine when her cousin J. Isaac, a well-known local singer, invited her to his home studio to see what she could do.

“I started singing and he stopped me and said, ‘I don’t hear you. I don’t feel your emotion,’” Auburn recalls. “And I was like, ‘I’m behind a mic in a room. You can’t see me.’ And he said, ‘That’s the thing, you have to make me see you. Let me see the words. Give me a picture.’ He taught me that you have to feel what you’re singing in order for the person who’s listening to feel it.”

As Auburn turned 13, she continued to work on her songwriting, posting tracks on her MySpace page, and growing her fanbase the grass-roots way. In 2007, Auburn released an independent album called Same Giirl on local St. Paul label FS Music. The album, which blended dance-club hip-hop with deep-reaching R&B, featured production by Naughty By Nature’s Kay Gee and Jer-Z (Lady Gaga, B2K), as well as contributions from her musical cousins, rapper Chellie B and producer/beatmaker Young Bishop. Same Giirl spawned the underground hit “Ewww!!!”, which climbed to No. 6 on DJBooth’s Underground chart.

That same year, Auburn hit the road opening for Keyshia Cole, performing in more than 20 cities and winning over scores of young fans every night. At the end of 2007, Auburn’s management received a phone call from Beluga Heights. Impressed by her singing and rapping, as well as her considerable songwriting talent and relatable, girl-next-door personality, Rotem signed her as the first female artist to Beluga Heights. When the label inked its joint venture with Warner Bros. Records in early 2010, Auburn signed on as well and Rotem has nicknamed her “The Princess of Beluga Heights.” Savvy about using social networking and digital media to connect with music lovers, Auburn has attracted new fans steadily through her YouTube channel and MySpace page, where she posts self-made videos and candid footage of her journey making her debut album. “I’m excited to meet my fans,” Auburn says, “because they’re the ones who helped me get here. I’m looking forward to getting out there even more. It’ll be amazing to perform for all the people who’ve supported me.”

DIZZY WRIGHT
Not many 21-year old rappers can say that they’ve been rapping for over a decade. The Las Vegas-based rapper began rapping at just 8 years old with the group “DaFuture” with his brother and very close friend – his mother wrote his raps at the time. “My Mom was like Joe Jackson,” says Wright, “She was a concert promoter so I was exposed to the music industry early – we even did youth reporting at major awards shows like the BET Awards.”
At 17-years old with several years of experience Dizzy decided to take his rap career seriously. Formerly known as Dizzy D Flashy, Dizzy was a winner on BET’s “Wild Out Wednesdays,” winner of the Sheikh Music “Rip the Mic” Competition and released 5 mixtapes, which lead him to rack up over 1-million views on YouTube. Wright wants for people to learn something when they listen to his music by discussing situations that his fans can relate to. “The internet allowed me to see what my music did to people – I like being able to see the response. When you rap, you have a voice and this is how I balance my thoughts,” says Wright.
In November 2011, Wright signed to Funk Volume after being discovered at the Sheikh Music “Rip the Mic” Competition in 2010. Impressed by his smooth flow, confident stage presence and energy that won over the crowd, Funk Volume knew he was a special talent and would be valuable addition to the team. On the heels of his latest mixtape “Soul Searchin’ Next Level,” Wright will release “Smoke Out Conversations” on April 20th, and says the tape was inspired by Don Miguel Ruiz’s widespread book, “The Four Agreements.” “I live the four agreements …. The first agreement is be impeccable with your word. People will learn something from this album.”

Bent on hoisting up Seattle as a music city that produces more than just grunge or alternative rock, Aquino takes great care with his music and hopes others see it as an evolution of the legends: The Sugar Hill Gang, Rakim, Phil Collins, Sting, Afrika Bambaataa, 2Pac, C-Bo and Jay-Z, to name a few. “My music is a lesson in contrast,” says Aquino. “From song to song or even within one track, it can go from smooth to rough; just like life.” In an effort to defy the regional limitations and expectations of rap, Aquino thoughtfully combines Southern soul with East Coast lyrical elements and smooth West Coast vibes to create a well rounded urban sound. HOPSIN

It would probably be easier if we told you what Hopsin doesn’t do, but Hop is an MC, producer, director, actor, and editor. And his journey has been anything but painless.
Like many kids, Hopsin wanted to be “cool”. But as hard as he tried, he never graduated past being that “weird black kid” that rode around on a skateboard. He tried to get attention by making people laugh, but he always ended up being the butt of the joke. He wrote songs for girls to get them to like him, but got no love.
Stuck in special education classes, Hopsin did not see much of a future. His teachers did nothing but reinforce the feelings that he wouldn’t amount to anything; especially if he continued to waste his time attending classes where nothing was actually being taught. So with no money and only a few real friends, Hopsin dropped out of school in 2004.
Determined to be one of Southern Cali’s premier MCs he bought an $8 microphone from Wal-Mart, installed Fruity Loops on his computer, and locked himself in the basement. Not only did he spend countless hours perfecting his own craft, he also studied the careers of artists to better understand what has made them successful. As time went by he knew that his lyrics and production had surpassed what he was hearing on the radio. He combined his skills with a new image [often seen wearing white contacts] and emerged from the basement as a complete artist. In 2007, Hopsin signed a major record deal with Ruthless Records.
Hopsin founded Funk Volume to share his story, spread his message, and display his many talents. He has been on a long journey to hone his skills, and to get comfortable being who he is. Funk Volume represents what has made Hopsin successful...real pain, real passion, real music.

The immediate positive feedback she got, just added fuel to the fire. She then followed up with a hot club track, "Take Ya Clothes Off" which featured Skool Boi. Another local success. Stina was nominated for the Twin Cities Hip Hop Award for "Best Female R&B Artist" and "Song of the Year" for "Take Ya Clothes Off." She is anticipating her release Spring 2012.

FLOWNETICS

FLOWnetics is Minnesota hip hop at its finest. With their mainstream sound and swagger, these 2 MC’s are bringin’ a whole new look to the Twin Cities hip hop scene. Not killers or gangsters, these cats still get respect because with their versatile flows, they're able to represent all facets of hip hop. They can go from being the life of the party with club bangers like “Bottle of Patron,” to venting their inner-most emotions with tracks like “Lonesome Town” and “Stand Tall” (their 35W dedication song). But don’t worry ladies, because they’ve also been known to smooth it out, with the grown and sexy tracks like “Just My Imagination.”

GROWING up in the inner-cities, they are able to draw off the struggle that they’ve witnessed first hand, but that’s not what really separates them from the rest of the game though. They have an uncanny ability to find unexpected approaches, to varied subject matter. For example, they have a song called “Can’t Stop,” which is an upbeat good-time song, about someone who can’t stop doing drugs (the nerve they’ve got). They also have a true connection and appreciation for the FLOWnetics fans because they know that they can only go as far as their fans will take them. This is the reason why they personally respond to the many messages you send their myspace page. But above all these two have the aura of superstars; they just know how to keep it so FLOWnetic. They’re going to bring a new look to a mainstream hip hop genre that definitely needs a makeover, the question is are you ready for The Takeover?

ENVY

From live bands to synthesized club music, the Midwest’s music identity spans pop to soul, country to jazz, rock to Hip Hop. In Minnesota specifically, legendary musicians like Prince and the band
Mint Condition branded the state internationally through years of quality music. In 2008, young rapper Envy is poised to bring even more positive attention to the Minneapolis sound with his own brand of radio-friendly Hip Hop. After debuting at #3 on Billboard’s Hot R&B/Hip Hop chart, and hitting #1 on the Hip Hop/R&B Single Sales chart, Envy’s single “Ringtone” enjoyed an impressive five-week run on the Hot Single Sales charts, hitting #16 in early June. Envy began his
rap career very early in life. When he was only 10-years-old, his sister taught him how to put the words together, and compliments came from every direction as the budding MC honed his skills. Sadly, Envy’s sister passed away when he was just 17, which gave him even more reason to take the music seriously. He entered open mics and rap battles to get his weight up in the Minnesota scene, and eventually the work paid off as more people began to recognize his artistry. Now Envy is determined to set the industry on fire!!!

KRAZY THA KREEP

Krazy tha Kreep, aka Krazy-K, an unsigned artist out of Minneapolis, MN.  Krazy developed a love for music at a very young age but started playing with rhyming around the 6th grade.  Known to be quiet, rapping is the way that Krazy can truly express himself and any other situations.  He has always been known to excel in tasks but due to the death of his brother in 2002, Krazy did not graduate.  Being very self-dependent, not having a diploma did not stop Krazy from making music and pursuing his dream to someday be a Minneapolis icon.
The Jungle was created around 2000 by Shawn Williamson. Shawn is a producer and an artist for the label. He started out making the beats on MTV Music Generator for the playstation and soon later advanced to programs like fruity loops for the computer. The Jungle crew has been interested in music for quite some time now but a bunch of bullshit prevented them from gettin music out when they wanted to.
The planned release for the Jungle Compilation was in 2004 and the recording would be done at IPR (Institution of Production and Recording), but due to financial aid problems, Shawn was kicked out. With that happening, they only finished about 5 tracks for the album. If you are close to them, you probably have heard some of them before (How we raised, Fast Lane ft IBE, etc.) but they never really got out.
But now, its 2010! Time to keep it moving. It has been 2 years since The Preparation. Krazy thinks that's enough time, don't you? The next project planned to be released in Sepetember in time for the 4th quarter is called The Psych Ward Admittance. With a new focus on music, Krazy plans to really get noticed.  Minnesota should be noticed as the North, the missing coast in the game.  It's time for Krazy to help get the north the recognition it deserves.  We up north.

MIKE THE MARTYR

Mike The Martyr was born in Virginia Beach, VA in 1985. His parents soon divorced due to drugs in the house, leaving his mother to raise him and his sister as a single mother in Richmond, the capitol of Virginia. He grew up in a neighborhood called Oregon Hill, right across a highway from downtown Richmond where he was raised until he was 13. Living on the same block as the popular corner store in the neighborhood, he was exposed to all kinds of hip-hop and music blaring out of oversized speakers in the backs of Suzuki Sidekicks and Cutlasses. As well as being exposed to drugs, sex & violence at a young age.

Mikes family moved to Minneapolis Minnesota with some of his mothers friends, due to violent arguments between his mother and her drug addicted boyfriend. His father, a guitar player in various bands his whole life, also moved to south Minneapolis into a small two bedroom apartment where Mike spent alot of time from 1997-2001, listening to music, doing graffiti and writing his first verses over Mobb Deep & Nas instrumentals. Mike quickly went from freestyle rapping at house party's, and cyphers at concerts, to doing shows & opening for major artists in the downtown nightclubs of Minneapolis & St Paul. As well as printing up his own mixtape cds, flyers & stickers, he started learning the business of the industry.

Once Mike got his name known he spent long hours day in and day out, in various recording studios across Minneapolis & St. Paul. Laying hundreds of verses for his projects and various other local rappers albums and mixtapes, he was also learning the process of recording and making beats through sampling old records. Mike was ahead of his time in putting up viral video footage from studio sessions and shows, as well as releasing music for free on the internet. Gaining the respect of the biggest hip-hop ''blogs'' like onsmash.com, 2dopeboyz.com, & The Source Magazine, Mike The Martyr's music & videos got national recognition and always garnished positive feedback. When A.G. of Diggin In The Crates came to Minnesota to do a show, he met Mike & they struck up a friendship that resulted in a solo A.G. album fully produced by Mike The Martyr, with features like Slug of Atmosphere, that will be released soon on an independent level. With all the hard work put in its exciting to see what the future holds for Mike The Martyr.

 SCOOTERBOI

On January 26,1988, Marquis Jamal (ScooterBoi) Hunt was born to be a star. Marquis was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin to a family of two older sisters and a single mother, Vicky Hunt, who is without a doubt, his number one fan.  As a multi-talented 24 year old rapper, songwriter, performer and promoter, Marquis works hard in hopes of fulfilling his destiny. Ever hard working as he is, the early life of the rapper was anything but easy. After living the first seven years of his life in Milwaukee, his mother made the choice to move the family to Minnesota in an effort to escape an abusive relationship. While living in Minnesota, the family faced another hardship, which was Vicky’s drug addiction.  Because of his mother’s addiction, the first four years in Minnesota proved to be hard for the two, thus the rapper had no other choice but to live with his sisters. Being the strong woman she is, Vicky made the decision to turn her life around, and overcame her drug addiction. To this date, she has been clean without relapses.

Although he struggled at home, Marquis found school to be much easier. He settled into school without difficulties and meeting new friends was a fast process. During the last year of high school, Marquis found his greatest friend, music. For Marquis, music became not just a hobby, but a lifestyle. Wanting to continue his education and further his career in music, Marquis desired to attend college. Unfortunately his dreams were put on hold in 2005, when he was shot while visiting a friend in Minneapolis. The musician was down, but not out of the game. Once he recovered, Marquis sought a higher education and applied to multiple Colleges of art. The rapper was finally on his way, until he was faced with yet another adversity that changed his life forever. In the summer of 2006, Marquis’ mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. This unfortunate event weighed so heavily on him that Marquis had to give up on college all together to take care of his ill mother. He also took this time to focus on his music. In this same year, Marquis dropped his first mixed tape entitled, “Rookie of the Year: Volume One.”  The support of the streets was huge, and rapping became the way of life for this young artist.

After graduating from Hopkins High School in 2006, the rapper went on to drop his second mix tape named, “(MVP) Most Valuable Punch lines: Volume Two.”  At this time, the artist was not only booking shows, but also learning the music business by working with 360 Entertainment, the best in Minnesota. After hooking up with a new rap group in 2008, the musician got the call that he had been waiting for. This call gave him the opportunity to travel to Colorado and open for worldwide recording artist, Chingy. After the show, the group was supposed to sign a demo deal and record some music, but things with the group went south, and the deal was off. Once again, ScooterBoi’s world was falling apart. After returning home from another dead end in 2009, the musician went back to work on his music, dropping his third mix tape, entitled “Hall of fame: Volume Three.” At this point, he received a great response from the streets of Minnesota.

Being that his life in the music game was stable, Marquis focused on another dream, setting up a night club. Marquis put together a night club for the teens of Hopkins and named it Club Exotic. The club took place on a Saturday of every month. For over a year, Club Exotic was a great place for the youth of Hopkins to stay safe while enjoying new music from their peers. The year of 2009 became tough when the artist lost a good friend and a great producer (Dj Reflexx) to a tragic accident. Marquis was at a cross road in his career, and no one knew what would happen next. The artist decided to push forward, and as 2010 approached, the rapper was becoming a huge name in the Minneapolis club and bar scene.

In early February of 2010, his fourth mix tape "Are you sick of me yet?” was released. This was Marquis’ best mix tape to date. Moreover, the year 2011 was big for the artist because his leaked song, “Overload” received over 2,000 downloads and views. Scooterboi was ready to get his company set up. The business plan was set and his group, Flight Academy, was formed. This company not only produces artists in Minnesota, but is working to have a clothing line and other products as well. Likewise 2011 was a great year for shows. The artist did over 60 shows at the year’s end and demonstrates no sign of letting up on performing.

Fast forward to 2012, Flight Academy (now Flight Academy Entertainment) is taking off. The steps are in place for this company to become an LLC in early spring of 2012. Marquis also will be releasing his first debut street album titled, “it's ScootA!” as well as releasing his smash hit video singles from this album including “Johnnie BravHo,” “I’m Beastin” and “Faded” in the summer. The possibilities are endless for this talented young man and the world will soon know the power of his music.
